Using Maps for Historical and Genealogical Research

TIP #5: How to locate and use maps as an aid in your research.  This tip is from Sylvia Nimmo's March 27, 2000 presentation to the Genealogy Special Interest Group.

          I. Internet Sites

               A.  Cyndi's List

                  1.Using any web browser go to cyndislist.com 
                  2.Scroll down to and click on Topical Category Index 
                  3.Scroll down to and click on Research Tools & Reference Materials 
                  4.Scroll down to and click twice on Maps, Gazetteers & Geographical Information 
                  5.Explore areas of interest to you 
                     
               B.  Source Guide by LDS Church (Mormons) 
                          
                  1.Using any web browser go to familysearch.org 
                  2.Click on tab for Custom Search 
                  3.Click on Source Guide 
                  4.Scroll down to and click on geographical area 
                  5.Suggestion  -  look for parish maps for Denmark, Germany, British Isles, England, Ireland,
                    etc. 
                 
               C.  United States Geological Survey Topographical Maps
                 
                  1.Using any web browser go to topozone.com 
                  2.Scroll down to, click on and read Find Tips 
                  3.Click on back arrow to return to first page 
                  4.Type in name of town, river, mountain, etc. and enter 
                  5.Scroll down the list that appears and click on the particular place you want to check out 
                  6.Explore the map that appears 

          II.  Software to Purchase

               A.  Family Tree Maker 7.0 and higher has capability to create maps showing ancestral migrations 

               B. Ani Map Plus shows changes in federal, state and county boundaries. Purchase from
