Using the Family Search Internet Genealogy Service
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Mormon Church)
TIP #2: Where in the world is "that" place, or how to locate
the county, parish, state and\or country to search for records of your
ancestor. Then take the next step to learn more about the records.
-
Using any web browser, go to the web site: familysearch.org
-
Click on the Library tab
-
When the Library page appears click on Family
History Library Catalog
-
When the FHLC page appears click on Place Search
-
When the Place Search page appears, type in the name of a place you want
to locate and click on search. You may limit a search to a state or county,
if you wish.
-
Example: Type in Moscow and click on search. There are six towns in the
world by the name of Moscow. Lets explore a record available for the Russian
Moscow.
-
Scroll down and click on Russia, Moscow, Moscow, Moscow.
-
When that page appears, click on Church Records.
-
When the Church Records page appears scroll down the Titles list and click
on Parish Register Transcripts, 1802-1884, Roman Catholic Church of
Moscow.
-
When the Parish Register page appears, read about the record. Click on
View
Film Notes. This will be a detailed list of records and film numbers.
-
Select the film that covers the records and dates of interest to you. Go
to a Family History Center (Georgetown, Round Rock or Austin) and interlibrary loan
the film to use in that Family History Center.
The most basic use of this exercise is to find out what county or parish
a town is located in. Towns no longer in existence may be very difficult
to locate. Be sure to try various spellings and mis-spellings for the town
you want to identify. The second use is to seek copies of records to search
for information about the lives of your ancestors.
