Cleaning up Your Act by Barbara Resnick


A. Relocating existing files
B. Backing up important files
C. Creating shortcuts to frequently used files
D. Cleaning up unwanted files on the Desktop

Preparation I - Doing Windows
o Open any folder by double clicking it to see a window showing the files and folders inside.
o Resize any window by using the double pointed arrows at the edges
o Move any window by 'dragging' it by the blue title bar.
o Close any window by clicking on the small X in the upper right hand corner.
o If two windows are open, the one on top (or the window with the blue title bar) is the active window. Click the inactive window to make it the active window.

A. Moving Day
o Locate the 'source' file in a window
o Open the 'target' folder in a second window
o Click (select) the source file (or folder)
o Click EDIT (Menu Bar in source file active window)
o Click COPY (to duplicate) or CUT (to move)
o Click EDIT, PASTE (Menu Bar in target window)

Review A
o A file or folder, which is copied and pasted, will create a duplicate of the original at a new location.
o A file or folder that is cut and pasted will delete the file or folder from original location and put the file or folder in a new location.

Preparation II - Taking a trip through your computer
o Double Click MY COMPUTER icon
o Double Click c:\ Drive
o Double Click (open) folders until you reach your destination.
(Only 1 window is open)
o Repeat to open a second window

B. Backing Up Important Files
or Finding and placing your files anywhere on your computer

Backing up a file or folder is COPYING the file or folder to an external location (floppy, zip, CD)

o Open a window, find the file or folder to be backed up
o Open a window, find the drive where the back up disk is located

o Resize both windows so you can see the source, the target, and the menu bars

o Select EDIT, COPY on the menu of the source window
o Select EDIT, PASTE on the menu of the target window

o Folder/files will be duplicated on the backup disk

o Store the back up disk in a safe location

Files you want to save and protect will be stored in a separate location

C. Taking a Shortcut
o Double Click My Documents (on the desktop)
o Locate an often-used file. Select it (one click)

o Click FILE, SEND TO …
o Click DESKTOP (shortcut)
o Close all windows.

o Find shortcut on desktop
o Double click the shortcut to access the file

Review C
Files you frequently use are available at the click of a mouse

D. Cleaning House - the desktop (What to do when you cannot see a menu bar)
o Create folders on the desktop
o Open a target folder (Menu Bar visible)
o Select Desktop Icon (No Menu Bar)
o 'Drag' the icon into the target folder and 'drop' it (Use left or right mouse)
o Icon will move from desktop into the folder

Icons frequently used are on desktop, unused icons are not

o A. Reorganize existing files by moving into appropriate folders
